At the core of AgeReady is the belief that with proper support and care, our elders can maintain purpose and meaning in life even in the face of significant disease and disability, impaired mental and physical functioning, and limited participation in social activities.
This program is designed to provide you with the tools you need to provide support and care to the older adult in your life.
Unpaid caregivers (typically family members or friends) are an essential part of long-term elder care.
Many aspects of caregiving can be rewarding, however it can also be difficult and even overwhelming at times. Emergencies and unexpected events can add even more stress to both the caregiver and older adult.
Being prepared ahead of time and having a plan in place can help to alleviate some of this stress and allow the caregiver to focus on caring for the older adult in their time of need.
Caregiving doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Often times, a caregiver has to navigate this new experience on their own.
The AgeReady assessment was designed to evaluate your caregiving readiness by checking to see if you have completed certain tasks that are often associated with caregiving for older people.
These tasks may include common things like preparing a will or keeping a list of medications up-to-date, but they also include things you may not have considered like recording videos for grandchildren or discussing the pros and cons of getting a companion animal.
By completing the AgeReady assessment, we believe you will feel prepared and ready for your caregiving journeys.
When an emergency or crisis situation occurs, being able to easily access certain information can make all the difference.
AgeReady can help with storing important documents related to the older adult.
Since multiple people are often involved in the care of older adults, having everything in one place can make everything much easier should anyone need to access it.
Spurred by his own experiences providing care for his elderly parents while serving as a Lt. Colonel in the Army and by applying the military’s concept of family readiness prior to deployment, Dr. Michael Parker, supported by an interdisciplinary team of geriatric professionals, has conducted numerous studies in the field of geriatrics and elder care with the aim of helping adult children ‘get ready’ for parent care.
Dr. Parker has over twenty years of research demonstrating the need for and value of empirically based, comprehensive assessment and intervention programs for eldercare aimed at minimizing the impact that providing this care has on the lives of caregivers. These studies have been published in respected professional journals, translated into user friendly materials for targeted groups, and presented at national professional conferences.
